AT Resupply
We are going to assume you hit Springer Mountain with plenty to eat. At least 4 – 5 days worth of food. Although there are several places to get resupply items off trail, Mountain Crossing is going to be the best on trail in your first 5 days.
If you are luck, at time it just right, there should be some Trail Angels like Fresh Ground/Leap Frog Cafe, if you are starting around March 1. Do not count on Trail Angels for a resupply. Embrace them though if you see them!
The next good opportunity is going to be in Hiawassee, GA. You will need to get a shuttle from Unicoi Gap into town to take advantage of the Engles Grocery Store. There are several Motels and restaurants. The Holiday Inn Express is nice but priced a bit higher than the rest. “Dicks Creek Gap” is another way to get to town.
The hike between Unicoi gap and Dick’s Creek can be done in 2 – 3 days or less. Just be ready for a good 3 – 4 day hike from Dick’s Gap to Winding Stair Gap at Hwy 64. You will cross over to North Carolina and get to climb Albert’s Mountain. This will also be your opportunity to get into Franklin, NC. Good Hostels, Motels, restaurants and resupply.
